By the old harbour, Montreal 20 July 2014Landed in Montreal last night.  Given that I’m away for a week, Bristol next stop halfway through the week, I’ve brought my running stuff.

It’s fairly flat where I’m staying (I’m going to try to write up a brief travelog to build this online diary) I thought I should be able to do a good time.

While it was hot, I managed a good pace for run #31, over 11km/hr for the first 20 minutes. I began to hit a wall about 20 minutes in. I made the mistake of looking to see how far I’d run. It all suddenly seemed too much and I just stopped.

Lots of things were different:

    • I didn’t know the area;
    • I was running all on pavement and I was very aware of my knees and hips;
    • It was hot; and
    • I didn’t have music on this time to down out thoughts and keep me focused.

But in the end I think the mistake I made was not setting myself interim targets to head for, which worked the last time I hit the wall.

Somewhat disappointing as I set out thinking I might run faster and further. I managed the faster (and if I’d kept going at that pace would have knocked another minute off my PB for 5km*), but for a shorter time and over less distance.

*but I didn’t….
