Today was run #41 and the day of the Downlands Challenge. Godmother of Child #1, having followed my nascent running career via Facebook, had suggested we enter as an excuse to come visit.
It was a beautiful early autumn morning, a chill in the air, but incredibly bright.
Despite the fast pace at the start, the run as a whole was far easier than last weekend, a combination of being colder, being spurred on by GoC#1’s pacing and the competition of other runners I guess.
The worst bit was definitely the field round the bottom of Blackcap and up to the top. One lesson learnt is to definitely eat porridge considerably earlier, or get my carbs from some other source.
Anyway, pushed by GoC with a sprint finish (let’s be honest, a slightly faster run into the finish line) and it was over in a respectable 44:53 (give or take). Even with the course appearing to be 4.73 miles rather than 5 miles (if Runkeeper is to be believed), this was a significant advance on the last run (53:44 for the same distance if you care).
It was a beautiful day, and if not fun it has left me with a sense of achievement. Suspect it won’t be the last.
